Common Name: Prickly pear cactus fruit
Latin Name: Opuntia humifusa
Description: The pads, as well as the fruit, are food to Native Americans.
Care must be taken as both the tiny and large spines are very irritating.
The pads are sold in produce markets as "nopales" and the fruit are known as
"tunas". Blooms late spring, summer.
Location: Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve, close to the Ranch House.
