Common Name: Toyon
Latin Name: Heteromeles arbutifolia
Description: By autumn the late summer, cream-colored flowers have matured into a red fruit. It's a favorite of wintering cedar waxwing, whose flocks can devour the fruit in a few hours of feasting. The fruit, seen in the photograph, was a "famine food" for the Native Americans. Normally a large chaparral shrub, it can grow into a small tree. Look for it on the north facing slopes. Nickname is California holly, as in "Hollywood".
