Identifying Common Grasses During a Drought Salt grass (Distichlis spicata) is common and readily identifiable because it remains green most of the year. Although this grass is quite small it is easily seen. It seldom grows taller than 6 inches. It has rhizomes (above ground root-like structures connecting related plants) that become somewhat yellow during the dry season. Distichlis likes alkaline soil, which we have in abundance in the canyon. This grass can be found in full sun through the canyon. Salt grass acquired its name from the salt that accumulates on the leaves. Local Indians used this grass as a source of salt for seasoning food. They would burn the grass and collect the ashes to season their food. The bunches can be a foot or more in diameter. The stems can be up to 30 inches tall and are sometimes called spikes due to their long linear stems. The bunches are sometimes referred to as caespitose. It is often used as an ornamental in local landscapes. Indians used the grass to make baskets. This bird is a seedeater and you may have them visit your feeders, but they also enjoy fruit as I can attest in my orchard! The male has very bright orange and black markings (do we see a pattern here?) while the female is a somewhat more muted peach. They both sing and the female sings on nest – highly unusual in the bird world! Looking at their thick bill, you can see how they are designed to crack seeds… think sunflowers. They have a lovely lilting song, which the books describe as a whistled warble. Their call is a distinctive high, sharp “PIK”! We heard them on our hike in the canyon last week but did not see them. My favorite little ball of fluff is the Pacific-slope Flycatcher. More often heard than seen, this summer visitor to our canyon has a notable high, thin whistle. The books call it “a slurred tseeweep “. It reminds me of the whistle one makes to call their dog. I have been quite successful duetting this whistle with the Pacific Slope, sometimes never seeing the actual bird. Here is my image from a few years ago, highlighting the notable oval eye ring behind his eye, yellow-olive in color. A little bird, only 5.5 inches in length, this small flycatcher winters in western Mexico. They are about 8.5 inches in length, with a very pale yellow breast, whitish throat, dark tail feathers and a slight crest at times. You may hear their call, a sharp “bik“. Say that 5 times! Look for their plain brown backs, dusky throats, and buff breast. These birds are aerial acrobats, dipping and soaring on pointed wings, with notched tails to capture insects on the wing, singing the whole time. We especially enjoy them in the evenings over the Preserve, dancing in the skies as they find dinner delicacies. This swallow summers all over the US and winters in Mexico and Central America. Projects - Vernal Pools Vernal pools are shallow depressions in the clay soils. They were once abundant on the mesas, and due to development, it is estimated that only 3% remain. In summer, they look like dry puddles, but in wet winters the rains fill the pools with water. Tiny cysts in the soil hatch into small transparent “fairy shrimp” when the pools fill, sometimes surviving decades of drought. Frogs breed and lay their eggs here, and snakes and birds visit the pools to catch and eat the fairy shrimp and tadpoles. Four rare and endangered plants occur in the vernal pools: Otay Mesa mint (Pogogyne nudiuscula) PONU, San Diego Mesa mint (Pogogyne abramsii), POAB, Spreading navarretia (Navarretia fossalis), NAFO, San Diego button-celery (Eryngium aristulatum var. parishii). The Friends lead a hike every year, weather conditions permitting, to visit local vernal pools, see here for the most current schedule. The insect larvae feed under the bark and destroy the cells that transport water and nutrients inside the tree. As adults, they bore a small D-shaped exit hole in the bark to fly and lay eggs on the bark of other oak trees. The GSOB has spread on firewood, so infested wood must not be moved or used as firewood until a tree has been dead for two years. beginning in 2018 the Friends have conducted field surveys recording the location of infested trees in the Preserve, and currently sponsor management actions with the goal of slowing but not eliminating the infestations and the tree mortality. Rye grass, oats and other grasses were first introduced in the 1800s to provide grazing for cattle. Others have grown from seeds in bird droppings, horse manure, and adjacent yards. They now also include artichoke, wild geranium, black mustard, horehound, curly dock, pineapple weed, and several filaree species. These plants crowd out the native plants, that provide important food and shelter for wildlife, and help with erosion control. The Friends sponsor and carry out weed removal in the Preserve and Black Mountain Open Space. Volunteers also help remove these plants by weeding and planting native species. New interventions finalized to the removal of invasive weeds in high -value areas are ongoing in Darkwood Canyon Trails and in Harrier Hill: both will be multi-year projects, co-financed by grants from Protect Our Preserves. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e7e5ee516dfff5fe6f11a33/1590648136941-LTKJK966V9IZI7AVD85E/brodiae+filifolia.JPG Our Projects - Surveys and Restoration Most of the native habitats of chaparral, coastal sage scrub and grasslands have been destroyed by development. In some areas of the preserves, non-native grasses and weeds dominate. The Friends have recently completed the restoration of two separate areas to suitable habitat for the endangered Cactus Wren. More promising locations have been identified and new restoration projects are ongoing. The Friends conduct a yearly census of other endangered species that still survive in the Preserve, such as Willowy Monardella (Monardella viminea), San Diego thornmint (Acanthomintha ilicifolia), and Threadleaf Brodiaea (Brodiaea filifolia). Restoration events can be joined by volunteers and are posted on our calendar. They run all year long and include a large project underway in the Santa Luz area, with work parties on many Sunday afternoons. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and high school students have often volunteered for the work parties. The canyon walls (cliffs) are gently sloped terraces of marine sediments, with bluffs ranging from 200 to 400 feet above sea level. The current landscape of Peñasquitos Canyon, Carmel Valley, and Del Mar Mesa began over 150 million years ago when the coastline was further to the east and these areas were underwater. The oldest rocks in the canyon are called the Peñasquitos Formation, formed when volcanic ash, clays, silts, sands, and sandy pebbles were deposited in a shallow trench along the continental edge, about 150 million years ago. The sediments and volcanic rock were mildly metamorphosed by heat and pressure into shales and metavolcanics rocks. Los Penasquitos Canyon and Black Mountain Open Space host several different habitats, each one with specific plant communities adapted to the local microenvironment. A number of rare plants and animals, adapted to extreme environmental variations are found for example in vernal pools, while endangered grasses and wildflowers survive in patches of grassland, an ecosystem which is especially vulnerable to weeds, and ever shrinking in distribution. For larger mammals and large top predators the most important features of the Canyon and Open Space areas are probably their size, conservation state, and the presence of wildlife corridors.
