Dear Friends, 2025 saw us expanding our restoration work in Black Mountain Open Space for Cactus Wren and Monarch Butterfly habitats.

We made great progress on our Harrier Hill/Fennel Forest Project, which will now be expanded to neighbouring plots.

Continuing the effort we first spearheaded in 2018, our trained volunteers are still surveying the Penasquitos Canyon old-growth Oaks, infected by GSOB.

You can support our ongoing efforts by participating in our volunteer events. Or donate to our General Fund to sponsor the purchase of California native plants, and the work needed to control invasive plant species that compete with them.

2026 Peñasquitos Fires

In June and August 2026, there were 2 fires in Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve with nearly 230 acres affected. The City, the Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, SDMBA, and other groups are working to protect the burn areas so the native plant habitat can recover and regrow. Off-trail activities harm this recovery by exacerbating erosion, crushing new sprouts, and introducing invasive weeds. As Friends, we’ll leverage our expertise in weed suppression and native plant restoration and, while we are already funding some of the necessary purchases for early erosion control and trail stabilization, will seek both donations from the general public and grant monies to restore the burn area.

How can we all help with the recovery ?

1. Stay on authorized trails
2. Do not enter burn zones
3. Follow signage and instructions from park rangers
4. Volunteer on site with the rangers
5. Donate to our dedicated Fire Recovery Fund
