Fire Scar Update - Trails are now open - 10/2/26
from Gina Washington, Senior Park Ranger
Happy Friday,
Great news—all authorized trails in Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve are officially open again following the recent fire! We’re excited to welcome visitors back to enjoy the canyon’s beauty. We've been seeing increased animal activity throughout the west end of the canyon.
As you explore, you’ll notice yellow rope fencing throughout sections of the burn scar. These guide ropes help everyone stay on authorized trails and protect sensitive regrowth as the habitat recovers. Please follow all posted signs and remain on designated trails.

A quick heads-up: there will be periodic trail closures as San Diego Fire-Rescue crews continue their work on the access roads. These closures will be temporary and targeted, and we appreciate your patience as they complete essential safety operations.
Additionally, an extreme heat warning is in effect this weekend. If you choose to visit the preserve, please exercise caution—bring plenty of water, avoid peak afternoon heat, and know your limits. Remember, dogs can overheat very easily, maybe best to leave them at home.
Thank you for your patience during the closure and for helping us protect this incredible place. Stay safe and enjoy your time on the trails!
